My Classroom website

Image
Here is the link to my website draft. Here is the link to my Pecha Kucha        Let me start with a little about me and what I do. I am a 38 year old, married  mother of 3 who is going to school for a Masters in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages).  I am currently a special education and multilingual learner teacher in the city of Woonsocket. I have students with a variety of needs who speak a variety of languages at home. The grade levels in my classroom are kindergarten through second grade.  As I was thinking about this project I started with my why. I believe that students learn when they have a community where everyone feels welcomed, important and heard. While there is more to my why, this is the specific point that I wanted to focus on. I took some time to think about what that means and how I will connect with everyone. I already have a solid connection with all of my students in the classroom, we really focus on comm...

Kahoot!

Image
The link to my Kahoot tutorial can be found by clicking on the picture or by clicking here .   I picked Kahoot because it is something that I use regularly in my classroom and all of my students are able to access it. Some may need a bit of help getting into the actual game but they are all able to play. I teach Special Education/Multi-lingual learners in grades k-2 so having something that they can all access is important.  I use Kahoot on "Fun Friday" to play games. We play a lot of social emotional games to help us practice these skills. I also use this tool to collect data on my student's progress in academic areas. Using this tool allows them to play a game while still showing me what they know or as we like to call it "being tested".   Sugata Mitra talks about our reptilian brain and how being tested is seen as a threat. I find that using platforms like this one brings down that affective filter and allows students to engage with the activity witho...

Looking For The Girls- Chapter summary

Image
The chapter asks the question "When young people go home and turn on the television, what kinds of things do they see"?  The author decides to spend a full day watching music videos, to find out what ideas, images and messages were being sent. They were particularly interested in the Role of Women, specifically African American Women in the role of hip hop and R&B music.  The first video discussed was by DMX. This song displays DMX and Sisqo singing and rapping. The women in the video have hardly any clothing on, looking very sexy but saying nothing.  Dmx lists the names of women who "seemed to have given him some pretty intense sexual memories".  They are flashed on the screen for less than 15 seconds as their name is mentioned. The second video that is discussed is "How Many Lick's by Lil Kim. This video has Lil Kim portrayed as a doll on an assembly line. Lil Kim is the main character with other female dancers grabbing themselves and dancing around...

Moana

Image
My slides are linked to the picture of Moana and here , just in case. It was interesting to watch Moana after our discussion, reading the chapter from Christensen and reviewing the slide deck.  That is one of my favorite newer Disney movies, so to put on this lens was interesting. I found that when watching the interactions with Moana, Maui and her father  I noticed more aggressiveness than I had in the past. Both men used force to get what they wanted from Moana. They yelled and put their hands on her in one way or anther to Make her listen.  And she wanted to please her father so badly, and fix Maui. I think watching the Beauty and The Beast clip shined a light on that one for me.  Using this framework helped me to focus in on certain aspects specifically. It guided about what to look for without telling me what to find. Otherwise I may not have been sure what I was looking for and/ or overwhelmed by the possibilities.  TE KA gives off some serious "women scor...

Final Project

Final Project: Based on my beliefs I wanted to find a way to make my classroom more accessible to all of my parents. I have found that some use my Class Dojo, others need to use Email and others do not respond to either.  After listening to others and watching some presentations I thought it would be a good idea to create a class website where all of our information would be stored. Parents could find important dates, links to other forms of communication and pictures of their children participating in activities at school. I began playing around with Google Sites and have started the skeleton of a website I need to complete my narrative  review it and create a slide show  do my voice over for the Pecha Kucha

A School in The Clouds

Ted Talk by Sugata Mitra Sugata makes the argument that our current education is based on the need 300 years ago to create the Bureaucratic Administrative Machine by the British Empire.  In order to be a part of the machine you had to know 3 things:  How to add, subtract, multiply and divide in your head. You needed to read and have good handwriting.  Sugata's argument is that we do not need those same skills anymore, only reading.  He began to do experiments with children who do not have access to the same technology or education to see if they could learn the skills needed to use technology and could solve complicated problems/ learn about complicated information. This brings us back to the idea of technology natives. Are children actually technology natives OR are they just curious enough to figure things out when THEY deem it interesting and important.  As a parent I believe we see this all of the time, but often do not think about it this way. If our...

Turkle VS. Wesch

Image
Connected But Alone In this TED Talk Sherry Turkle starts off talking about what it was like to get a text from her daughter before going on stage. Saying that it felt like a hug. She goes on to say that she was so excited for technology back in 1995 when we logged in to technology and then we logged off and went about our lives. Compared to when this TED Talk was recorded in 2012 where technology runs our lives. ( and still does in 2021)  She claims that technology is changing what we do and who we are WE ARE SETTING OURSELVES UP FOR TROUBLE.... "Goldilocks Effect" People have more control over where they put their attention we are hiding from each other we can't get enough... if we can control it Conversation Problems:                                         1. they are in real time                         ...
